Send us your first day of school photos
The first day of school is always a time to snap away. We want to share your special moments – whether all of the kids are enrolled at the same school for the first time, best friends are reunited after a summer apart, or if it’s a student’s first day at a new school.
Please email your photos – of students, teachers and parents alike – the names of those pictured, and the name of the school to alene@easyreadernews.com on or before Friday, September 2. Photos from all South Bay schools welcome.
Two legged cats lay down sounds for four-legged cats
The hometown band, Abrakadabra, will perform at Kah Asian Restaurant and Lounge on August 27 for a fundraiser benefiting the Peter Zippi Animal Fund. The fund, created in 1977, has helped more than 14,000 lost or homeless animals in the South Bay, providing them with medical treatment and shelter. 8 – 11 p.m. Free, donations accepted.
Swapping clothes, donating to charities
peace.love.swap. held its fourth clothing drive in Manhattan Beach on Saturday, August 20. About 60 families participated in the swap, donating used children’s clothing and maternity items and in return, picking up items that they need. The leftover items, about a dozen full boxes and bags, were donated to two local charities: the Pregnancy Help Center and A Cat’s Tale. “We got a really great group,” said Laurie Phan, who started the organization in Manhattan Beach in February. “Everyone seems very positive about it.” For more information, visit www.peaceloveswap.com.
City issues parking permits
On Monday, the city began issuing parking permits to residents who live on the north side of Manhattan Beach Bouleveard between Laurel Avenue and Highview Avenue, to allow them to park on the south side of Manhattan Beach Boulevard. The permits are in response to complaints to the city by residents about the parking restrictions placed on the south side of the street. “The restrictions were intended to discourage downtown employees from parking in residential neighborhoods, not to restrict residents from parking in their neighborhood,” said City Manager Dave Carmany, in an email.
Orienting the city’s young professionals
Leadership Manhattan Beach, a local networking organization of high school students and adults curious about the history and development of Manhattan Beach, will hold an orientation for the class of 2012 on Monday, August 29 at the Belamar Hotel. The class consists of 28 individuals, including five teens. Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the program – the incoming class will graduate during Manhattan Beach’s centennial year. 6 – 8:45 p.m.
