Former Mira Costa standout Lane Carico was recently named one of 10 NCAA women’s volleyball student-athletes who are finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®) Award.

Carico, an outside hitter at the University of Miami, is the first player in school history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career and became the school’s first AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American when she was selected to the third team in 2010.

Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award winners are based on four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition – and determined by a selection process that includes NCAA Division I college coaches, national media and fans.

The award is presented each year to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across ten different sports commemorating the loyalty of seniors that honor a four-year commitment to their university. The Senior CLASS Award® recognizes these student-athletes for great achievement during competition and in their community while staying in school.

A member of the Dean’s List, Carico is an Exercise Physiology major with a Psychology minor and has a cumulative GPA of 3.553. She has participated in Habitat for Humanity events during her collegiate career and, for three years has been involved in Dig Pink (a breast cancer awareness event) and Women and Girls in Sport Day (clinic and interaction). Daily voting for fans is being held through Nov. 21 at www.seniorclassaward.com/vote/.

An All-CIF player at Mira Costa, Carico helped lead the Mustangs to a perfect 37-0 record and a state championship in 2007.
