Baseball: Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn will be leading a hitting camp hosted by South Bay Surf Baseball at Redondo Union High School on Monday, Nov. 21 from 5-8 p.m. The camp is open to players 5 years and older. Early-bird registration is ongoing for Redondo Beach Little League. Open to residents of the City of Redondo Beach between the ages of 4 and 14, the league consists of six divisions and will begin play on March 3, 2012. Online registration is available at www.RedondoLittleLeague.com. Walk-up registration will also be available on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Perry Park. Running: Starting and finishing under the Christmas lights on the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, Dec. 25, this year’s edition of the Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K Run will offer participants a choice of two races to compete in. The first competition begins at 3 p.m. with the night race beginning at 5:30 p.m. Kids races follow each event. The entire course will be lit by luminarias and glow necklaces and T-shirts will be given to all participants while supplies last. Early registration fees are $30 for adults, $25 for kids races. Volleyball: The Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame has found a home and a kick off party will be held Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Hermosa Beach Community Center, the site of the new exhibit. The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) founded the Hall of Fame back in 1992 but until recently lacked funding and a location. The party will include a nostalgic photo display, a beach volleyball highlight video as well as honor a handful of inductees. Jim Arico will emcee the evening. All Hall of Fame inductees are invited to attend. Photos, videos and other items are wanted for the exhibit. Donation is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Surf); Saturday, Feb. 18 at El Porto (sponsored by Dive N’ Surf); Saturday, Mar. 17 at 26th Street, Manhattan Beach (sponsored by Pier Surf); Saturday, April 21 at El Porto (sponsored by Surf Concepts) and Saturday May 19 at the Manhattan Pier (sponsored by Spyder Surf).
Fitness: AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls which are open every day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a Ropes Course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost is $20 and advance registration is recommended. Martial Arts: Three-time UFC champion and MMA Hall of Famer Royce Gracie will hold seminars on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4 at the Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu network, 2074 Pacific Coast Highway in Lomita to benefit the Exiles Black boys U-15 soccer team, a non-profit youth athletic organization in the South Bay founded in 1976. Saturday’s classes include kid’s self defense, 1-2:30 p.m.; adult self defense, 3- 5 p.m. and a meet-and-greet, 5-6 p.m., where he will be available for autographs and photos. Sunday’s seminar includes a self defense/jiu-jitsu class, 10- 11:30 a.m. for children ages 11-15. From 12 noon to 2 p.m., Gracie will teach a Jiu-Jitsu technique class for adults. The day will end with a MMA adult seminar, 4-6 p.m. In addition to the RGJJ seminars, James Strom, former USC strength coach and professional athletic trainer, will offer a one-hour circuit training workout, 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Sunday. There will be door prizes, raffles and a silent auction. Seminar prices are $25 for circuit training classes, $35 per class for children, $50 per class for adults.
