Shots linked to gang fight injure one in Hermosa Beach

A fight linked to Long Beach gang members ended with about a half dozen gunshots outside a Hermosa Beach nightspot, prompting one man to seek hospital treatment in Long Beach for a bullet-fragment wound to the head, police said.

Several men were fighting outside the Zen Lounge on upper Pier Avenue about 2 a.m. Easter Sunday, when one of them brandished a 9mm firearm and fired, Hermosa police said.

A witness told police that one of the men yelled “Long Beach Insane,” an apparent reference to a Crip gang, before the shots were fired.

The men fled, and police said a black Mini Cooper with large wheels was seen leaving the scene.

“A victim was not located at the time of the shooting, however a male was struck by a bullet fragment and later sought treatment at a hospital in Long Beach,” police said in a prepared statement. “The victim did not know the identity of the shooter or gang members involved.”

Police were urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Mike Frilot at 310-318-0332 or mfrilot@hermosapolice.org.
