Hermosa Beach — no charge for electric charge

Hermosa Beach Mayor Jeff Duclos stands by as William Kostman of Plug In America recharges his electric vehicle for free at a city charging station on upper Pier Avenue. There was no immediate word on whether Kostman’s dog is with Pug In America.

For a limited time, the City of Hermosa Beach is giving away free charges for electric vehicles, to encourage residents and visitors to use four new charging stations.

“Hermosa Beachis committed to protecting our environment, and we are proud of the aggressive actions we have taken to ensure our city is at the forefront of ensuring a greener and healthier future,” Mayor Jeff Duclos said.

“We hope to encourage sustainable choices and attract visitors from throughout the region to frequent our shops, restaurants and other businesses with the knowledge that they will be able to recharge before making a long drive home,” he said.

Under the introductory program, electric vehicle drivers are getting two free hours of charging at the stations, two in the front parking lot of City Hall, and two in the 300 block ofPier Avenue. The City Council is scheduled to consider future charging rates May 22.

“Hermosa Beachis one of the leaders of our South Bay cities that are preparing for the future by installing EV [electric vehicle] charging stations,” said Jacki Bacharach, executive director of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments.

“It’s great to know I can travel from my home in Malibuto Hermosa Beachto enjoy a nice lunch and get my EV charged while I’m dining,” said William Kostman, a member of the organization Plug In America.
