The Redondo Beach Unified School District recognized this year’s employees of the year at last Tuesday’s School Board meeting.

“This is a really fun time of year for us because we get to recognize our employees of the year,” Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Nancy Billinger said.

Teacher of the year Melanie Sullivan, a 4th grade teacher from Jefferson Elementary who has worked at RBUSD since 2006, was honored for her passion for children and education.

“She is at team player, motivator and above all a lifelong learner,” said Billinger. “We are proud to have Melanie represent the RBUSD in the L.A. Teacher of the Year competition.”

Sullivan thanked her family and told the board how privileged she felt to work in the Redondo Beach school district.

“I’ve worked in lots of different districts across the country and never felt more welcomed or more appreciated than I do here,” said Sullivan. “I want to give a quick shout-out to my girls Paige and Brooke who are often left to find a ride home because [their] mom’s out doing something else, and my husband Kevin who’s cooked many dinners because mom’s doing something else. Thank you very much.”

Each employee who was honored was given a plaque with a red sneaker that said, “your daily work alongside children has taught them how to walk, and by your example where to walk. Your footprints will be the stepping stones to their future.”

Javier Marquez, a custodian at Washington Elementary, was honored by the board for his outstanding work and ever-present smile.

“Javier has been a valued member of Washington school since 2006,” said Billinger. “Always with a smile, Javier contributes each and every day to make the school a pleasant place to work and learn. [He’s] always willing to help, often going above and beyond his duties. During lunch he can be seen talking with kids, jumping rope or kicking a soccer ball. [He’s] always eager to help throughout the day and does the last minute unexpected jobs with a positive attitude. He’s proactive and always looking for ways to make Washington shine.”

Sean Epps, the Child Development Center teacher of the year and employee at Lincoln Elementary School’s CDC was greeted with the biggest crowd. Before being honored, “Go Mr. Epps!” was shouted from all corners of the audience.

“Sean is described by colleagues as a great listener, a comical energetic leader and an involved, helpful and unique individual who gives wonderful advice,” said Billinger. “An effective team player and motivator, he maintains a wonderful rapport with students, parents, elementary and CDC staff. It is clear through his classrooms circle time drama activities that Sean embodies a passion for children; their voice and their creativity. He possesses the qualities and characteristics that embody a great teacher.”

Epps thanked all his family members who showed up for his award along with all the employees he works alongside.

“I love my job, I love the district, my site supervisor and director,” said Epps. “I’m so humbled with this award because I work with the best staff, the best CDC (Lincoln). I love them dearly and we look out and are accountable to one another… I love being with the kids, I love just making a difference, and I thank you all for being here.”

Billinger also announced that Epps was one of the first employees to sign up for the district-wide weight-loss challenge. Since the start of the program, Epps has lost 89 pounds. “And he is looking forward to the 100 pound mark and beyond– and we’re all going to get behind him and support him.”

“Just a week and a half ago I know somebody who passed away from obesity,” said Epps. “It is a silent killer and I knew that if I didn’t do my part, my card could get pulled next.”

“I am humbled and honored,” said Brandt. “I consider myself very fortunate to work with articulate, knowledgeable, personable colleagues…. They are truly remarkable students.”
