Redondo Beach began growing outwards this week as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started moving one million cubic yards of sand from the entrance channel of Marina del Rey to help replenish beaches in the South Bay.
The sand is being removed from the Marina del Rey channel to improve navigational safety for area first responders and other boating traffic, a U.S Army Corps of Engineers release said. The project is part of a $13 million dredging project that began in early April.

About 520,000 cubic yards of sand will be placed onto barges for transportation to the Port of Long Beach for its Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project.
Dutra Dredging Company will deposit additional clean sand on the shore Redondo Beach Dockweiler State Beach and Redondo Beach for future replenishment needs.
The beach between the Topaz and Ruby street intersections will receive 75,000 cubic yards of clean sand and an additional 85,000 cubic yards will be placed shore.
Sand being placed between Topaz and Ruby will widen the beach about 60 to 100 feet, making the beach become level with the bike path.
The dredging process is expected to be completed by late summer. ER
