Top-ranked Redondo captures elusive Bay League girls volleyball crown

Redondo’s girls volleyball team held onto its No. 1 ranking in the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA poll with a four-set victory over host Mira Costa, snapping the Mustang’s 27-year streak as champions of the Bay League.

Redondo (33-3, 8-0) enters the playoffs with a 27-match winning streak while Mira Costa (18-11, 6-2) is ranked No. 10 in Tuesday’s poll. Pairings will be available after 1 p.m. Saturday at cifss.org. Wild-card matches will be held Monday followed by first round action on Tuesday. All matches are slated for 7 p.m.

Hannah Mosebar had 15 kills in leading Redondo to its 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14 win and season sweep over rival Mira Costa.

Skylar Dykstra added eight kills and 22 digs, Brianna Lanktree recorded nine kills and two blocks, Abril Bustamante had nine kills and one block, Skye Compton had seven kills, Katie Rotondo had 21 digs, Norene Iosia added 39 assists and nine digs and Leilani Martinez contributed 10 digs for the Sea Hawks.

Lexi Millington led Mira Costa with a match-high 19 kills. The Mustangs were coming off a sixth-place finish in the Santa Barbara Tournament of champions.

After defeating La Costa Canyon 25-16, 24-26, 26-24, 14-25, 25-11, Mira Costa fell to St. Francis in the fifth-place match 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20.

Grayce Campbell recorded 31 kills and 21 digs on the second day of competition while Millington added 20 kills and 36 digs; Corie Bain had 80 assists, 30 digs, 11 kills and seven aces and Carley Muller added 39 digs.

Redondo hosted its own Power Classic tournament where it defeated Long Beach Poly 25-17, 25-10 in the championship match. After winning their pool on Friday, the Sea Hawks swept Los Osos 25-18, 25-17, Valencia 25-18, 25-17 and St. Lucy’s 25-21, 25-15 to reach the finals.

Dykstra and Iosia were selected as Co-MVPs of the tournament.
