Beach Cities Sports: Baseball, football, running, surfing and more

Football: Beach Cities Sports (BCS) flag football league will be holding a toy drive benefitting the Richstone Family Center during its day of “Super Bowl” games on Sunday, Dec. 16 at Mira Costa High School. New, unwrapped non-violent toys will be accepted throughout the day, which includes seven games featuring teams of 6-12-year-old players. The first game is slated for 10 a.m. and the final game of 12-year-olds will start at 6 p.m. Founded in 2007, BCS is a not-for-profit, all volunteer league comprised of 59 teams with kids from Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Torrance, and Palos Verdes. BCS also offers a Spring football league consisting of nine games, playoff and Super Bowl. Games are played at Mira Costa High School, American Martyrs School and other fields in South Bay.

Fundraiser: The Manhattan Beach-based West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation (WCSMF) will be hosting en evening celebrating the first Los Angeles Lakers championship and 33-game winning streak accomplished in the 1971-72 season. On Saturday, Dec. 8 beginning at 6:15 p.m. at Valentino Restaurant in Santa Monica, the festivities kick off with a cocktail reception and celebrity “meet and greet” followed by a gourmet dinner and wine tasting and the Lakers Legends Program that includes a live auction. Proceeds will benefit WCSMF, a non-profit charitable organization that provides free sports medicine care; certified athletic trainers, funding for athletic awards and scholarships and a sports medicine mentoring program for 22 Los Angeles County inner-city schools. Baseball: Early-bird registration is ongoing for Redondo Beach Little League. Open to residents of the City of Redondo Beach between the ages of 4 and 14, the league consists of eight divisions and will begin play on March 2, 2013. Online registration is available at RedondoLittleLeague.com. Walk-up registration will also be available on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesday. Dec. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Perry Park.

Running: The Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 5:30 p.m. The event starts and finishes under the Christmas lights on the Manhattan Beach Pier with glow necklaces and t-shirts guaranteed to all pre-registered runners and late registrants while supplies last. The Little Elves Dash for kids follows the 5K. Early registration fees are $35 for adults, $30 for kids’ races. For more information, visit racewire.com.

The Party Meets the Pavement at the 4th Annual Allstate Life Insurance Los Angeles 13.1 Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. The half marathon begins on the Venice Boardwalk and ends in Playa Del Rey. Live entertainment, food and refreshments including the Michelob Ultra beer garden will highlight the festivities. Runners will also be able to donate the shoes off their feet through a special partnership with Allstate and Give Your Sole, which provides worn athletic shoes for those in need. The 5K will begin 15 minutes after the start of the marathon. Entry fees are $75 (half marathon) and $25 (5K) through Oct. 18, increasing thereafter. For more information, visit 131LosAngeles.com.

Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders Club has announced the schedule for its 2012-13 South Bay Surf Series. Open to non-club members, the contests are slated for: Saturday, Dec. 8 at the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier; Saturday, Jan. 5 at 26th St., Manhattan Beach; Saturday, Feb. 2 at El Porto; Saturday, Mar. 9 at 26th Street, Manhattan Beach; Saturday, April 13 at El Porto and Saturday, May 11 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Track and Field: Former All-American and longtime UCLA coach Anthony Curran has started a youth track-and-field program for kids ages 10-14.
