
Memorial service for coach Bob Fish
A memorial service for Mira Costa High School coach Bob Fish will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. All are invited to attend and pay respects to the beloved coach, who died at 70 last week after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
E-waste collection
Manhattan Beach Unified is encouraging residents to skip the trash can, and instead, recycle their old electronics – such as computers, monitors, keyboards, cell phones, and printers – at Manhattan Beach Middle School Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds from the collected “e-waste” will support Manhattan Beach schools.
Holiday & Centennial Fireworks
The Travel Channel has named Manhattan Beach’s holiday fireworks celebration one of the top two holiday festivals in the nation. To determine the winner, the Travel Channel will film this Sunday’s event at the Manhattan Beach pier for its upcoming special, “Christmas Showdown.”
Sunday evening will feature two separate fireworks shows: the first at 7 p.m., marking the city’s 24th Annual Holiday Fireworks; and the second at 8:30 p.m., a special Centennial Fireworks show sponsored by Skechers.
The event will also feature a Santa Claus float, a bounce park and a snow park, which for admissions will accept canned foods, new toys or cash donations for the YMCA and the Friendship Circle Toy & Canned Food Drive. Â
String change event
In exchange for two cans of food, Dietz Brothers Music is offering to re-string guitars for free on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Food donations will go to St. Margaret’s Center. 240 S. Sepulveda Blvd.
Book signing
Three local authors – Lisa Becker, writer of Click: An Online Love Story; Lori Jones, writer of Growing Up Beautiful; and Christopher J. Lynch, writer of One Eyed Jack – will be signing their books at Pages Bookstore Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. 904 Manhattan Avenue.
Sister City exchange
The City of Manhattan Beach, along with Redondo Beach, has joined the Hermosa Beach Sister City Association in its student exchange program with Loreto, Mexico. Middle school students who want to participate in the annual visit to the sister city this spring must apply by next Monday, Dec. 10.
