Fire fundraiser

The Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association hosts its 14th annual Pancake Breakfast 7:30 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 30 at the firehouse, 540 Pier Ave., during Fiesta Hermosa one of the South Bay’s biggest events.

The breakfast will showcase the culinary talents of firefighters, paramedics and EMTs as they prepare pancakes, sausage, fruit and coffee.

Most ingredients have been donated by local businesses such as Starbucks on Hermosa Avenue, Trader Joe’s, Target, and Fresh & Easy in Manhattan Beach, Costco in Hawthorne, Howe’s Market in Redondo Beach, and Papa Cantella’s in Vernon.

A silent auction and raffle will include items such as a wet suit from Body Glove, a strand cruiser from Hermosa Cyclery, a custom long board from Becker’s Surf and board shaper Jose Barahona, four loge section Dodgers tickets and a Whole Foods gift basket valued at $100.

Cost of breakfast is $10 for people 13 and over, $5 for ages 5 through 12, and free for kids 4 and under. Bidding on silent auction items and raffle ticket purchases will be available throughout the event.

In the past the event has brought over 900 people together to kick off the start of summer during Fiesta Hermosa, and last year raised almost $12,000.

Area entities that have benefited from the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association include the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, Hermosa Beach Education Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and Fred B. Kelterer Scholarship.

What? What?!

A construction inspector handed out earplugs as workers removed stretches of sidewalk on upper Pier Avenue, which is being revamped with widened sidewalks, a new roadway, a median and large planted areas. The work on Friday and Monday caused noise and vibration, prompting the earplug option.
