Mira Costa, Redondo girls begin high school beach volleyball playoffs

Playoffs for the second season of the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League get underway Thursday with wild-card matches played at Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica.

Redondo (6-4) finished third in the Bay Division and will take on Notre Dame (3-7) in a 4 p.m. wild-card match. The Sea Hawks enter the playoff as the No. 8 seed.

Second-seeded Mira Costa (10-0) captured the Bay Division and will play the Thousand Oaks-Foothill winner in the first round at 4 p.m. Friday at Dockweiler State Beach.

Bay runner-up Long Beach Wilson (8-2) is seeded sixth and will face Saddleback Valley Christian in the first round. Playing in the Westside Division, the West Torrance Junior Varsity team (2-8) earned a wild-card berth and faces Notre Dame.

Quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches will be played Saturday, May 11 at Annenberg.

Mira Costa concluded the regular season with sweeps over Long Beach Wilson and Harvard-Westlake. The Mustangs No. 1 team of Skylar Caputo/Lan Nguyen dominated its matches 21-11, 21-9 and 21-8, 21-14.

Katrina Kernochan/Emma Smith won by scores of 21-5, 21-12 and 21-0, 21-3 and Lindsay Chalmers/Carley Muller had little trouble with 21-3, 21-5 and 21-7, 21-6 victories.

Redondo swept West Torrance Varsity and held off Palos Verdes 2-1. The Sea Hawk’s top team of Katie Barkley/Marissa Mitter split its matches, defeating West 21-19, 21-19 but falling to Palos Verdes 25-23, 21-19.

Lauren Cordero/Andrea Gonzalez won by scores of 21-17, 21-17 and 21-19, 21-13 while Katie McCarthy/Maddi Flentie earned 21-15, 21-19 and 21-16, 21-16 wins for the Sea Hawks.
