Hundreds begin Memorial Day with shoreline run in Manhattan Beach

Low tide came early this year for the Manhattan Beach Summer 5K which was held on Memorial Day and a pair of out-of-area runner took top honors in the male and female divisions.\

Marty Wacker, 42, of Grand Junction, CO, captured the title with a time of 17 minutes, 44 seconds, outpacing two participants running under assumed names.

Express Pine Apple, 24, of Rancho Palos Verdes placed second at 18:07 edging out Satan Diablo, 19, of Torrance who crossed the finish line at 18:32 while wearing the appropriate bib number 666.

Kimberly Smith, 42, of Victorville won the women’s division with a mark of 19:54. Jeannie Robinson, 48, if Long Beach was the second woman to finish at 23:33, sprinting ahead of Lindsay Sellars, 35, of Hermosa Beach who posted a time of 23:51.

Females finishing first in their group included: Hayley Bloch (Redondo Beach, 1-10, 26:40), Madi Kennel (Redondo Beach, 11-14, 23:57), Madilyn Morse (Long Beach, 15-18, 29:09), Ellie Stevens (Avalon, 30-34, 24:55), Sellars (35-39), Smith (40-44), Robinson (45-49), Julia Fretschi (Hermosa Beach, 50-54, 26;14), Marian Drahnak (Hermosa Beach, 55-59, 27:47), Sheila Daniel (Manhattan Beach, 60-64, 30:57), Sue Reinhardt (Rancho Palos Verdes, 65-69, 29:48) and Carolyn Merritt (Palos Verdes Estates, 70-74, 34:12).

In the kid’s 400 meter race, six-year-old Ian Fogel of Culver City took top honors with a time of 1:42. Keira Ishak, 7, of Los Angeles was the top girls finisher at 1:45.

Manhattan Beach’s Jack Nammack won the kid’s 1K. The eight-year-old finished with a time of 4:13. Rosie Lopez, 10, of San Pedro won the girl’s division at 5:09.
