South Bay volleyball fans have grown accustomed to watching high-caliber teams and players in the area and on Friday and Saturday, spectators can watch some of Southern California’s best when the annual Redondo Power Classic takes place.
Hosted by Redondo Union High School, the tournament features 32 teams that will be competing at Redondo, South Torrance and West Torrance High Schools.
“We have many ranked teams in CIF playing in our tournament, along with top teams from Bakersfield and San Diego,” Redondo head coach Tommy Chaffins said.
The Sea Hawks are the defending champions, defeating Long Beach Poly in the Gold Bracket championship match last year. Redondo is ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA poll behind Los Alamitos.
Action begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Sat. All Gold Bracket matches will be held at Redondo with the finals scheduled for approximately 3 p.m. Silver Division (3rd place teams) matches will be played at South and Bronze Division (4th place teams) will compete at West.
Friday’s pool play matches held at Redondo include Pool 1 featuring Orange Lutheran (No. 10, Div. 1-AA), Valencia, Palisades and Redondo 2; Pool 2 with Redondo (No. 2, Div. 1-AA), North Torrance (No. 6, Div. 2-AA), Notre Dame Academy and Rio Mesa; Pool 3 with Harvard-Westlake (No. 9, Div. 1-A), Palos Verdes, Ventura and Buena Park and Pool 4 with Los Osos, Vista, Oxnard and La Jolla,
South Torrance will host: Oaks Christian (No. 2, Div. 2-AA), South Torrance (No. 5, Div. 2-AA), Notre Dame, Saugus in Pool 5; St. Lucy’s (No. 2, Div. 1-A), Peninsula, Millikan, La Canada in Pool 6;
West Torrance hosts Scripps Ranch, Long Beach Poly, Los Altos West Torrance in Pool 7 and Sacred Heart, Centennial, Bishop Montgomery and Santa Monica in Pool 8.
While Redondo will be busy with its own tournament, Mira Costa will be competing in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions where the Mustangs will attempt to better their sixth-place finish in last year’s tournament.
Both tournaments will not only serve as a tune up for the playoffs, but for the Mira Costa-Redondo rematch on Tuesday when the Bay League and regular season finale takes places at 7 p.m.
The Sea Hawks won the first meeting between the rivals with a 25-20, 25-20 25-22 road victory, but Mira Costa’s young team continues to improve and has moved up to No. 4 in Division 1-AA.
