
Perennial power Saugus captured the girls and boys cross titles titles at the Great Cow Race in Cerritos Saturday to remain ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Division 2 polls while Redondo turned in a strong performances again a talented field .
Samantha Ortega won the girls race for Saugus with a time of 16 minutes, 30.08 seconds. Saugus also received top-ten finished by Sabrina Janes (5th, 17:46.34) and Ashley Heys (6th, 17:50.15).
Citrus Valley’s Claire Graves finished second (16:33.19) and South Torrance’s Kimberly Coscia placed third (16:56.70).
Amber Gore led Redondo with a 4th-place finish at 17:17.23 and Anevay Hiehle finished 10th at 17:55.90.
Saugus recorded 39 points, clearly defeating Division 2 rivals Redondo (67) and Serrano (85). South finished 10th with 274 points and Torrance placed 11th with 338 points.
Redondo is ranked second and Mira Costa is No. 7 in the CIF-SS Division 2 poll. South is ranked No. 10 while Palos Verdes holds the top spot in Division 3.
Also running for the Sea Hawks in the field of 175 runners were Taylor Beaudoin (13th, 18:03.19), Nicole Beaudoin (19th, 18:09.55), Nicole Pederson (21st, 18:12.50), Thalia Silva (24th, 18:14.81), Trinity Leonard (33rd, 18:39.44) and Breya Wynne (71st, 19:57.50).
In boys competition, Loyola’s Robert Brandt took top honors with a time of 14:22.40, beating Saugus’ Brian Zabilski (14:34.54) and Redondo’s Carlos Suarez (14:46.38).
Ryan Tate (5th, 14:56.57) and Jordan Serrano (6th, 14:59.86) helped Saugus edge Loyola 61-59 for the team title. California finished third with 116 points and of fourth-place Redondo (132). The Sea Hawks are ranked No. 7 in Division 2. Palos Verdes’ boys are ranked No. 3 and West is No. 6 in Division 3.
South finished 14th with 397 points, just ahead of Torrance (15th, 422). Chadwick placed 27th with 696 points.
South’s Nick Lofgren finished 7th with a time of 15:04.31 and Redondo’s Ethan Comeaux placed 8th at 15:14.99.
Also running for Redondo in the field of 234 runners were Nicholas Elias(37th, 15:53.05), Sergio Rodriguez (40th, 15:55.46), Andrew Zavala (44th, 15:59.42), Jonathon Douglas (51st, 16:09.41), Luke Stevens (58th, 16:13.71), Joshua Alther (90th, 16:47.57) and Zachary Rounds (123rd, 17:18.19).
