Throughout October, Palos Verdes Estates is celebrating its 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, culminating with a big shindig on Saturday at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Tickets are $125 and available at PVE’s City Hall or online at pvestates.org.
Last Thursday, renowned jazz pianist and PV resident David Benoit performed with his trio at Farnham Martin Park next to the Malaga Cove Library. He played a variety of tunes from his more than 30 albums, including his now-classic “Kei’s Song,” written for his wife over 29 years ago.
Afterwards, there was an opening reception for “Reflective Perspective: an Art Exhibit of PVE History, Then and Now.” It’s running through Oct. 30. It pairs vintage photographs with paintings by contemporary, local artists.

One of the more arresting paintings is of the rusted hull of the Dominator, a Greek freighter that was lured by sirens onto the rocks of Lunada Bay back in 1961. On Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. there’s a free lecture at the Malaga Cove Library entitled “The Dominator: Action, Mystery, and Comedy – The Full Story of a Famous PVE Shipwreck.”
Perhaps the truth about that fatal, fog-filled night will emerge at last.
