Pumpkins race down Manhattan Boulevard

Kids and adults gathered for the 24th annual Pumpkin Races in Manhattan Beach on Oct. 26.

Referees waited at the bottom of Manhattan Beach Boulevard to catch the pumpkins as they rolled down the hill.

Employees of the city of Manhattan Beach lined up their pumpkins for the departmental race. The police won.

“We never had a chance,” said Mayor Wayne Powell (orange shirt with sunglasses) after the race while holding his “I (Heart) MB” pumpkin.

“The plan was to take me out from the beginning,” said Fire Chief Robert Espinosa (red shirt, center).

The winning team of the Pumpkin Races was Tommy, a fourth grader from Robinson Elementary School, and Tom Griffith. Their pumpkin, Redbull Racer, took first place.
