Kids and adults gathered for the 24th annual Pumpkin Races in Manhattan Beach on Oct. 26.

Referees waited at the bottom of Manhattan Beach Boulevard to catch the pumpkins as they rolled down the hill.

Elizabeth Vazquez, who works for race sponsor LA Car Guy, came from downtown LA for her third time at the races.

Sadie Harrington, 11, and Catherine Cormack, 11, raced their pumpkin Scary Perry (based on pop star Katy Perry).

LA Car Guy owner Mike Sullivan smashes an impostor pumpkin with the Mallet of Justice. “That’s what happens to cheaters,” he said.

Employees of the city of Manhattan Beach lined up their pumpkins for the departmental race. The police won.
“We never had a chance,” said Mayor Wayne Powell (orange shirt with sunglasses) after the race while holding his “I (Heart) MB” pumpkin.
“The plan was to take me out from the beginning,” said Fire Chief Robert Espinosa (red shirt, center).

The winning team of the Pumpkin Races was Tommy, a fourth grader from Robinson Elementary School, and Tom Griffith. Their pumpkin, Redbull Racer, took first place.
