‘Carmen’ score performance
Mira Costa High School’s highly-acclaimed Vocal Ensemble performs music from “Carmen” for its “Prelude to Greece” fundraiser. In January, the ensemble was invited to perform selections of the opera at the International Festival of the Aegean in Greece next month. The invitation was an added surprise after the choir was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall’s 2011 Solo Concert Series in New York.
“To say that the musicality, choral tine, sensitivity to dynamics, dramatic interest, rhythmic exactitude, and musical leadership were excellent would be a gross understatement,” said Peter Tiboris, artistic director of the firm that will produce the shows, of the choir’s audition tape.
“A Prelude to Greece” takes place from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Cross-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd. in Hermosa Beach. Tickets cost $25 at the door. All proceeds go toward fundraising efforts for the ensemble’s trip to Greece. A reception with refreshments will follow. For more information, visit www.mchschoirs.org.

Fathers Day V-ball Tourney
Kids can show dads how much they care by going head-to-head with them in a Fathers Day Volleyball Tournament June 20 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The tournament is recreational with pool play only, with separate divisions for adult/children and advanced-level players. Participants each receive a T-shirt, sand bucket and shovel. Prizes will be given for matching uniforms and for kids who “carry” their dads on the court.
All proceeds go to Project Fatherhood. For more information about Project Fatherhood, contact www.childrensinstitute.org. $50 per person. To register for the tournament, call (310) 802-5448.
