Armed-robbery attempt in North Redondo

Redondo Beach police continue their search for the man who attempted to rob a local business July 3 with an assault-type rifle.

Near 1 p.m. at Diamond Massage, in the 2300 block of Artesia Boulevard, officers responded to a call from an employee that the man walked into the business and demanded money. The employee was able to flee and called 911. No money was taken nor anyone injured.

The Redondo Beach police contained the area and called in a SWAT Team out of caution, since the employee did not know if the man was still inside the building.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call RBPD detectives at (310) 397-2477.

Mayor Pro-Tem Nehrenheim calls for return of Redondo’s birthday event

New Mayor Pro-Tem Nils Nehrenheim proposed a return of the bygone Redondo Beach April 29 birthday celebration in comments Tuesday night at the city council meeting.

Noting that it was important to bring the community together, he said he will work with the city’s Historical Commission to restore the former town event, perhaps at Dominguez Park. Redondo Beach was founded on April 29, 1892.

In addition, Nehrenheim noted a plan for a city “Dodger Day” event in September.

Busiest day of year for RBPD on Fourth

The Redondo Beach Police Department posted its busiest day of the year on the Fourth of July, with 524 calls, including 137 to 911. Officers were dispatched to 225 total calls-for- service, including 49 fireworks related.

A total of 11 arrests were made on the day, ranging from domestic battery, to public intoxication.

The day concluded with two fireworks shows, from two ocean barges – one at Seaside Lagoon and the other off of Avenue I.

“Traffic was very, very congested afterward,” said RBPD Chief Joe Hoffnan. “It is very challenging when people arrive throughout the day and leave all at once.”

The chief patrolled on motorcycle on the Fourth, appearing at 14 block parties. He and his partner led two different bike parades.

Public speaks out on mayor pro-tem vote

Several members of the public spoke out against Nils Nehrenheim’s appointment as mayor pro-tem at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, some calling for a re-vote of the 3-2 decision June 21 – which broke a longstanding tradition of rotating the mayor-pro-tem post.

Nehrenheim was voted in the same night Mayor Bill Brand announced he would take a step back in his availability to start a new treatment regimen for his lung cancer.

Brand was absent Tuesday night, as was District Five City Councilwoman Laura Emdee, who was next in line in the mayor pro-tem rotation.

No re-vote was taken. ER
