About Town Redondo: City youth commission, new RBUSD classes, Rotary saloon

Redondo Union High School will add rugby and competitive dance for P.E. credit next year.

City youth commission to resume

The Redondo Beach youth commission is on its way back, at the behest of city councilmember Paige Kaluderovic.

The commission has been vacant, for lack of quorum, since December 2021. It has 13 seats, for youth ages 13-19, to meet once per month at city council chambers, sitting at council row.

“We want to include more people in local government, to get them early, start them at a younger age,” Kaluderovic said.

She would like to have the commission filled by the end of this school year and re-start meetings by August. She mentioned e-bikes as an initial topic for the kids.

“I think if they’re part of the solution, they’ll participate,” Kaluderovic said.

Applications are now being accepted. For more information, go to Fedondo.org/government/boards_and_commissions

Redondo Unified adds three more classes

Two more classes are being added to Redondo Union High School, and one at the middle schools.

Starting in 2024-25, RUHS adds rugby and competitive dance, during 7th period, for the full year, as a P.E. credit. The school already has club rugby and club competitive dance, which now practice outside school hours.

Many sports at the high school have a designated class period as part of practice time.

Middle schools in the district will add “College and Career-ready Explorations,” a semester-long class for seventh and eighth-graders. RBUSD contracts with Paxton/Patterson College and Career-Ready Labs to bring in demonstration modules such as for welding, video production and barbering.

“It transforms classrooms into learning pods,” said Dr. Anthony Taranto, executive director, RBUSD career pathways. “It’s entirely hands-on. I think there’s going to be a lot of interest.”

Rotary Club stages western fundraiser

Rotary Club of Redondo Beach holds its “Fistful of (Donated) Dollars” murder mystery fundraiser Sunday, March 24, at the R10 Social House from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m., with silent and live auctions and live music. Former Redondo Beach Mayor Steve Aspel will play a saloon bartender named Schott O’Whiskey.

Tickets cost $95. Proceeds go to vocational scholarships, supporting victims of domestic abuse and other Rotary causes.

CORRECTION:

In the article, “Pickleball named top priority over pool at Aviation Park” (Easy Reader, March 14) Dallas Poffenroth, Redondo Beach USA Pickleball ambassador, was misquoted as saying Hermosa Beach is one of the neighboring cities adding more (shared-use) pickleball courts. Cities she meant in her comment were limited to Manhattan Beach, Torrance and El Segundo.

Also, she did not call for “conversion” of two tennis courts at Alta Vista Park in Redondo Beach, just restriping for dual-use with pickleball. ER
