About Town Redondo: Kid on E-bike hit, Catalina Coffee project, Bridge at Park

Redondo Beach Police patch

Boy hit on e-bike, woman driver yells, keeps going

A 13-year-old boy on an E-bike was hit at the intersection of Inglewood and Artesia Aug. 15 by a vehicle making a legal left turn.

After impact, the female driver stepped out of a gray-black, late-model SUV, yelled at the kid for running a red light, got back inside and drove off to the west.

“The person who fled was not at fault,” said Redondo Beach Police Detective Scot Martin.

The boy, a Redondo resident, was transported from the afternoon scene by ambulance, reporting wrist and leg pain. He was riding against traffic at the time of the collision, with no helmet.

He was hit in the crosswalk, while on the bike, another violation. E-bikes are required to be walked across crosswalks. Witnesses said the boy rode through a red light.

The driver was described as a woman in her 40s to 50s, wearing sunglasses and a trucker-style hat.

“She is obligated to stop even though she was not at fault,” Martin said.

He added that police have little to go on because witnesses did not report a license plate number nor could tell what make of SUV the vehicle was.

Catalina Coffee project returns to planning commission

The City of Redondo Beach Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. to consider final certification of an Environmental Impact Report for a mixed-use 30-unit residential project adjacent to the former Catalina Coffee and Cafe on North Catalina Avenue at Emerald Street.

The proposed development would include demolition of a building at 116 North Catalina and removal of part of four existing buildings at the site. Remaining structures are intended for adaptive reuse as part of a potential historic district.
