About Town Redondo: White shark in harbor, water cease, Kiwanis fair

Great White spotted in harbor

A juvenile white shark was spotted in King Harbor shortly after sunset on Labor Day. Boaters reported seeing the shark near the harbor entrance buoy.

Redondo Beach Fire Department Harbor Patrol kept paddlers out of the area. Swimming in the harbor is prohibited, and no swimmers were in the water.

This is the first time in my 20-year career that I have heard about a shark in the harbor. It is a unique event, to say the least,” said Jason May, Redondo Beach Fire Department division chief/operations. “With the recent increase in sightings up and down the coast, and semi-regular sightings in Manhattan Beach, this was probably only a matter of time.”

Harbor Patrol Officers monitored the area through the evening, but did not see the shark.

Residents asked to quit watering yards for two weeks

Redondo residents are asked to cease outdoor outdoor watering for 15 days during the repair of a water delivery pipeline. The shutdown dates are Sept. 6 – 20.

Residents are also asked not to mow lawns and limit showers to five minutes.

The 36-mile pipeline in question delivers Colorado River water to Southern California. A leak was found earlier this year followed by a temporary repair and reduced pipeline capacity, while a long-term solution was developed.

“We need to make this urgent repair to ensure this infrastructure can continue serving Southern California in the immediate term and for years to come,” said Metropolitan Water System Operations Manager Brent Yamasaki. “We don’t take this call lightly, but it is what is needed at this time.”

Woman dies after boat sinks at Two Harbors

A 65-year-old woman died Sept. 3, and another person was injured when a 40-foot cabin cruiser sank Saturday morning, while moored at Two Harbors, on Catalina Island.

Lifeguards responded to calls at 4:03 a.m. that the boat was taking on water. People on nearby vessels first arrived in dinghies, after hearing screams from the (area of the) sinking boat.

Three people were pulled from the water, including one who was rushed to the Catalina hospital.

The deceased woman was recovered from inside the boat.

Her identity had not been released by press time.
