+ Volunteering Time and Hearts

The 54th Annual Assisteens Recognition Event was held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel’s Crystal ballroom, honoring a group of high school seniors consisting of twelve young ladies as Recognees of Assisteens. They represent three high schools from our community: Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, Palos Verdes High School, and South High School. The Senior Class danced an elegant traditional waltz with their fathers to “Moon River.” The Class of 2019 has donated over 10,000 hours of their time in volunteer service to South Bay nonprofit organizations. Photo by Joey Ikemoto Photography

+ Beautification Project and Awards in Lunada Bay

The Silver Spur Garden Club was pleased to present its annual Community Landscaping Award to the Lunada Bay Homeowners Association for the spectacular garden it created for the community along the Paseo Lunada corridor in Lunada Bay. Bill Ailor, team leader of the Beautify Lunada Bay project, coordinated the combined efforts of the Lunada Bay Homeowners Association, the PV Peninsula Land Conservancy and the City of PV Estates.  Funding support was provided by the SoCal Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, the PV Homes Association, the Lunada Bay Elementary School PTA and local residents.  Key team members included project leader Peter Bena and Marlene Breene, who designed the landscape plan. All of the planting and rockscaping has been done by devoted volunteers, including local students, and most of the water-friendly plants are native to our peninsula habitat.  It is an impressive effort by caring members of the community to beautify the area and give pleasure to all. Photos by Joan Friedman
