Barfly — Comings and goings, golf, Cogen’s tip, Four Daughters

Closed: Upper Manhattan, Highland Ave, MB. Since Harry O’s hightailed it to El Segundo its old location has been cursed.  They say you can’t go back and achieve the same magic twice but I’d say, give it a shot – it works for fashion so why not? Clearly an upscale, expensive bar/resto serving beer in plastic pint glasses didn’t work so maybe it’s time to tease the hair and ‘90s it up again; Closing: Ragin Cajun, Pier Ave, HB will be closing its doors at the end of the year after 18 years in biz but not to worry, Monsieur Stephen Dominigue is not running back to the Bayou. He is taking his wildly successful biz to Plaza El Segundo, Rosecrans/Sepulveda. It doesn’t make me happy that I won’t be able to walk around the block in my pajamas for comfort food but it is worth the drive…

Charity Fun: The event of the year is here so get your costume ready and polish those clubs, the 15th Annual Shea-Hurley Foundation Golf Classic takes place Saturday, November 6 at The Lakes Golf Course, PCH, El Segundo. There will be an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start, beer on the course, bbq, raffle, silent auction and prizes will follow on the patio. $75 per person/$350 teams of five. Sponsorship holes are also available. All proceeds go to The City of Hope, The John Wayne Cancer Institute and designated charities. Call 310.546.5257 or email hurleyfoundation@aol.com. The party will continue at the Fishack, Pier Plaza, HB with even more silent raffle gems and specials. It’s a great time for a great cause and you never know, there may be a little fly buzzing around feeding you beers while you schwing away…

Reader Info: One of my fave fans, Harvey Cogen, followed up to my story on Lucille’s BBQ, Del Amo Mall, Torrance with some scoop of his own just in time for the holidaze: Costco sells Lucille’s gift cards at 20 percent off so you get $100 worth of gift cards, usually in two $50 cards with no expiration for $80 bucks. Now that’s my kind of gift giving! Give a fitty to a friend and keep a fitty for yourself and save $20! Costco also sells gift cards for McCormick & Schmick’s, Wolfgang Puck, (which are even good at Spago), Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Jamba Juice and more. Even better, Harvey said if I don’t have a Costco membership I should, “Just ask.” I don’t so Harve, you wanna pick me up some cards and a barrel of wine? That’s how they sell it right?

One Appetizer, Two Entrees, Three Beverages, Four Daughters? Earlier this year Clint Clausen, former senior VP of restaurants/nightlife for Los Angeles based SBE hospitality which represents Katsuya in Brentwood, Gladstone’s Malibu, Hyde Lounge Hollywood, The Ritz Plaza South Beach, The Sahara Las Vegas, among others, honored his four daughters by opening a neighborhood restaurant on Highland Ave, MB called, “Four Daughters,” (honor with a side of anonymity). I stopped in for dinner recently with a friend of mine to give him a well-deserved break from planning the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair and had a great experience. Although we missed happy hour, (thanks Burstein!), we will definitely be back for it: $4 apps and $4 any two draught beers or house wines, (that’s $2 each), from 4-7 p.m. daily. The apps include sliders, chicken wings, nachos, sweet fries, hummus, bruschetta, “bang bang” shrimp or ceviche with chips and from first look at the HH menu, I expected the regular menu to be of the pub-ish ilk. Upon further inspection I found that although it is American comfort food, as it purports to be, it is of a higher quality than I expected – you can dress up and go for pan seared scallops or dress down and chow on the “4DK” burger with fries and feel comfortable either way. We noticed someone at the next table eating the burger, which prompted my reaction: “Damn! That is a man-sandwich!” It was huge. My friend decided to go lighter with the ahi tuna entrée and I ordered the chicken piccata over linguini and both were large enough to share. The chicken was plump and juicy which it should be but unfortunately is often not and at $15 there was enough for both of us plus a box to take home. We started with the spinach and quinoa salad which was tasty and refreshing with spinach leaves, red grapes, cucumbers and warm quinoa, (a grain similar in texture to taboulleh), in a balsamic vinaigrette. We were happy. Four Daughters serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily from 7am-10pm. Beer and wine only. Call 310.545.2444 or check out fourdaughterskitchen.com for more info…
