
Redondo’s track and field teams displayed their prowess last Friday capturing the boys and girls team titles at the Bay League finals held at Mira Costa.
Anastasia Chiodo won the girls 100 (12.24) and 200 (24.87) dashes and Tairyn Montgomery captured the long jump (18-01.75) and shot put (35-08) to lead the Sea Hawks who will compete in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 prelims on Saturday at Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo.
Redondo’s Zuri Henderson placed first in the 400 (56.11) earning her the second seed in the Division 1 prelims.
Redondo’s girls relay teams won the 4×100 (47.67) and 4×400 (3:54.69) races, the latter marking the fastest time heading into the prelims. Mira Costa time of 3:58.38 is the seventh-fastest in Division 1.
Freshman Akaylah Hill has the fourth-best mark in the triple jump after winning the Bay League title at 37-04 and Sea Hawk teammate Kaitlin Heri holds the top mark in the pole vault at 12-00.
Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson continued to dominate the hurdles winning the 300 (43.65) and 100 (14.56), the No. 1 and No.2 times, respectively, going into the prelims.
Peninsula champions included Tammy McVickar (high jump, 5-02) and Audrey Pillsbury (discus, 124-04).
Palos Verdes’ distance runners dominated the girls races with Cassidy Webber winning the 3200 (11:08.33), Jacquelyn Smith (4:57.68) and Camille Hines (5:02.69) taking the top two spots in the 1600. Smith (2:14.91), Morgan Irish (2:15.80) and Hines (2:17.00) finished 1-2-3 in the 800
The Sea Kings will compete in Division 3 at Estancia High School in Carpenteria.
In boys competition, Redondo won the 4×100 (43.11) and 4×400 (3:25.04) relays and had first-place finishes by runners Carlos Suarez (3200, 9:27.24), Sergio Rodriguez (800, 1:59.23), Jerone Jackson (400, 50.34) and Dallas Branch (200, 22.42).
“Winning league was a huge accomplishment and something that I really hoped that I could do this year – especially after coming in second the last two years,” Suarez said. “It is definitely a nice confidence booster going into the postseason. My training has been going really well, and I am looking forward to hopefully fulfilling the goals that I made for myself.”
In field events, Redondo’s Jose Fowler won the high jump (5-11), Christopher Odanaka won the shot put (43-08.50) and discus (29-05) and Tate Curran posted the best Division 1 mark in the pole vault (14-09).
Peninsula champions included Devon Scott Ford (110 hurdles, 15.37), Noah Korotzer (100, 11.15), Jacob Funes (triple jump, 45-01) and Ozioma Ogele (long jump (21-09.50).
Mira Costa’s Chance Davis won the 300 hurdles (40.43) and Palos Verdes’ Robert Franklin captured the 1600 race (4:18.20).
