Cafe Stories: Voices From Hermosa

Hermosa Beach Museum’s exciting new interview series, Cafe Stories: Voices from Hermosa. Every other Thursday beginning on November 7, Gitana Cafe, will host the Hermosa Beach Museum for an interview with well-known members of the Hermosa Beach community. Weekly Sports luncheon, H.T. Grill

El Camino College basketball coach Robert Uphoff and South Torrance High football coach Matt Mishler will speak at the South Bay Athletic Club (SBAC) lunch at the H.T. Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The public is invited to attend. Scheduled to speak is former West Torrance High, El Camino College and Iowa State football star Ray Lima. 12 p.m. Cost of lunch is $30. Murder-Mystery Clue

Murder and blackmail are on the menu when six mysterious guests assemble at Boddy Manor for a night they’ll never forget. Was it Mrs. Peacock in the study with the knife? Hummingbird Flights, SCBG

Keith Taylor “Transitioning from Summer to Winter Growers” Keith will talk about what he has learned over eight years of living in the Central Valley.  He prefers his succulents to look like habitat specimens rather than cultivated plants; growing them with limited water, little to no feeding, and hot sun to give them the look of collected plants. Bug Expedition, SCBG 

Calling all junior entomologists to discover and learn about the bugs in the garden! You will create your own identification guide that you can use at South Coast Botanic Garden and even your own backyard!  Each child will use a magnifying glass, notebook, pencil, and crayons to record their findings. Veterans Day Presentation

Footsteps of my Father: Tracing a Veteran’s Story through his WWII Tour in the South Pacific. Join the Hermosa Beach Museum for a presentation with guest speaker Mark Shoemaker. The reception and presentation will follow the 11 a.m. Veterans Day Ceremony with the City of Hermosa Beach on the front lawn at the Community Center. On this Veteran’s Day, in honor of Andrew Jefferson (A.J.) Shoemaker Jr., U.S. Navy Chief Pharmacist Mate, his son Mark is making a photo rich presentation on A.J.’s Pacific tours of duty during WWII. Mark researched his father’s military activity and recently retraced his footsteps in the South Pacific by traveling on a cargo ship throughout the coral atoll island country of Tuvalu (Ellice Islands) where he found many WWII remnants. The presentation will cover island life before, during and after WWII, including the current struggles with rising sea level due to Climate Change. A.J.’s second tour of duty was on the Fletcher Class Destroyer USS Charles Ausburne where after numerous kamikaze attacks off Okinawa, celebrated the end of WWII. Afterwards, like so many other Veterans, A.J. settled in the South Bay, raised his family, and enjoyed a career in aerospace. 12:30 p.m. Hermosa Beach Museum, 710 Pier Ave.

Veterans Day Memorial, Redondo Beach

Keynote speaker: Colonel Andrew Dermanoski, US Space Force, Commander of Los Angeles Air Force Base. Mayor Pro Tem Paige Kaluderovic will make a civic greeting on behalf of the City of Redondo Beach. Other community leaders, elected officials, veterans and military dignitaries will also participate. A veteran from the local community will be presented the Flag from the Memorial during the ceremony. 1 – 2 p.m. Veterans Memorial, 309 Esplanade, Redondo Beach. Visit: rbveteransmemorial.com.
