Spotlight: St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade returns for its 27th year on Saturday, March 11. (In the event of rain, the parade will be held, Saturday, March 18). Hermosa Chamber Person of the Year and Indivisible Arts founder Rafael McMaster will be the grand marshall. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at the top of Pier Avenue, proceeds west to Hermosa Avenue, and south to 10th Street. Following the parade, musicians from South Bay Music Connection will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. on Pier Plaza. South Bay Music Connection provides teen and young adult musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents. There will also be family-friendly activities, and a selfie station on Pier Plaza. Patrick Molloy’s will offer a free green beer to customers who download the app for ZipInMail, a local startup whose mission, according to founder Bijay Chetty, “is to save trees by replacing paper mail with a Virtual Global Postal System.” To install the app, visit  ZipInMail.comFor more information, visit HBChamber.net/parade

Sports luncheon

This week’s luncheon meeting of the South Bay Athletic Club (SBAC) will feature Norm Chow and Andy Diver. Chow, the long-time college and NFL offensive coordinator, will talk about his experiences as coach of the Helvetic Guards, a Zurich, Switzerland team in the European League of Football. Diver is Mira Costa High’s baseball coach. The SBAC meets at noon every Friday at H.T. Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The luncheon is open to the public; cost is $30.

Free trade event

Ten Thousand Villages will host a Fair Trade Rug Event at three South Bay locations. The event will take place March 10-12 at Crafted in San Pedro (at the Port of Los Angeles, 112 E. 22nd St., No. 173), March 17-19 at American Martyrs Church (1431 Deegan Place, Manhattan Beach) and March 23-April 1 at Ten Thousand Villages’ Redondo Beach store (in the Riviera Village at 1907 S Catalina Ave.) The event will feature over 300 hand-knotted rugs, from intricate florals to hand-spun wool natural dye tribals, in sizes from 2’x3’ to 10’x14’.

Kite Festival

The 49th Annual Redondo Beach Pier Kite Festival is noon to 5 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Pier.  The event is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring their own kite or purchase one at one of the many shops on the Redondo Beach Pier and the International Boardwalk. Prizes will be awarded in various categories, including the best handmade kite, youngest kite flyer and the youngest at heart kite flyer. A classic rock band will perform live on the center stage. Spring musical

Manhattan Beach Community Church’s 2023 spring musical is “Little Me,” a 1962 Neil Simon musical comedy that tells the rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story of a young girl from the wrong side of the tracks. “Little Me” chronicles her zany path to wealth, culture, social position and love. South Bay Cities Council of Governments

The South Bay Cities Council of Governments’ 23rd annual General Assembly will take place March 23, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center, 801 E. Carson St., Carson. The theme for this year’s event is “The South Bay: Leading the Way in Resilience and Adaptability.” The program will explore how the South Bay is adapting to the potential impacts of climate change. The keynote speaker is Gene Rodrigues, assistant secretary for electricity at the U.S. Department of Energy. The public is welcome to attend. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.
