USC Marching Band performs for Manhattan Beach birthday girl
The USC Marching Band performed “Happy Birthday” on the Metlox Plaza in downtown Manhattan Beach on Sunday to celebrate the 50th birthday of USC Dental School alumna Dr. Janelle Holden. The Manhattan Beach dentist was having her party at Shade Hotel. Holden is the creator of Tanner’s Taste Paste, a toothpaste for kids, which comes in chocolate, vanilla and orange vanilla

Hermosa merchants to welcome sailors
Sailors from the guided missile destroyer USS Wayne E Meyer will be offered special discounts by Hermosa Beach merchants during Navy Week, which began Tuesday, August 14 and continues through Monday, August 20. On Saturday, August 18, a free shuttle will ferry the sailors between their ship in San Pedro and Hermosa.

Health District’s Shaw leaves for Ann Arbor
Michael Shaw, the Beach Cities Health District’s director of communications, has resigned to accept a marketing position with a private school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, his home state. Christan Higa, the district’s communication specialist has been named as Shaw’s interim replacement.

Catalina Coffee plans bike ride to new store
Catalina Coffee Café will hold a ribbon cutting on Friday, August 17 at noon, and a grand opening the following day from 2 to 5 p.m. The ribbon cutting will be preceded by a bike ride, beginning at 11:30 a.m., from the original Catalina Coffee Company at 126 N. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach, to the new location, 3.7 miles away, at 2810 Artesia Blvd., Redondo Beach.

Jackson’s Bistro resurfaces in El Segundo
Three year’s after the closure of the popular Jackson’s Bistro on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, the restaurant is being reincarnated at Jackson’s Food + Drink on the plaza next to the Arclight movie theater at 2041 Rosecrans Blvd., in El Segundo. An invitation only ribbon cutting will be held Wednesday, August 29. Jackson’s will open to the public the following evening. Beginning August 22, Jackson’s will be open for lunch, dinner, happy hour and late night dining. They describe their menu as “low-key gourmet.”

Kiehl’s to open first LA store in Manhattan Village
“True Blood’s” Sam Trammell will help celebrate the opening of Kiehl’s in Manhattan Village on Thursday, August 16. The New York-based skin and hair care company’s first Los Angeles area store will mirror the company’s original New York flagship, which began as a neighborhood apothecary in 1851, blending vintage and antique apothecary fixtures with modern neon. A Men’s Destination and shave Bar will be tailored to the concerns of male patrons. The 625 square-foot free standing store will feature graphics honoring the late pop artist Andy Warhol, who purchased Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion in bulk from the New York store.

A percentage of all 2012 purchases will benefit Project Angel Food, a charity for men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses. The first 50 grand opening customers to arrive after 11 a.m. will receive a complimentary Crème de Corps 4.2 oz and a Lip Balm #1.

Boardwalk burgers launches loyalty app
The newly opened Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries in downtown Hermosa Beach has launched a “loyalty and rewards” mobile application that will award “loyalty points” with every visit. The application allows Boardwalk to publish mobile offers and advertisements, and to track customer visits, purchases and award redemptions, according to the company’s web site. The rewards program offers a free burger with 100 points and a free Boardwalk T-Shirt with 200 points. A point is awarded for every dollar spent at the restaurant.

SCE blacks out Manhattan Beach, again
Nearly 2,000 SCE customers in Manhattan Beach lost power on Monday, August 13, shortly before 6 a.m. , requiring parking enforcement officers to direct traffic on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, between Pacific Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard. The outage was the second in Manhattan Beach in a month. On July 12, 5,000 Manhattan Beach residents lost power.

The outage was the result of new cable failing, SCE spokesperson Scott Gobble said.

Garrett McNamara, the Guinness World Record Holder for largest wave ever ridden, has been signed by Redondo Beach-based Body Glove to promote the new Body Glove Surge energy gel.

Hermosa Chamber, Young Professionals plan beach clean-up
A beach clean-up day will be organized by the Hermosa Beach Young Professionals, Consolidated Services and the Hermosa Chamber on Saturday, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach pier. The public is encouraged to sign up online at HBChamber.net

Fred of Fred’s Flooring passes on
Fred’s Flooring owner Fred Kelley Preach passed away July 19, at age 57. Preach was a surfer and lifelong Bob Dylan fan who played in numerous bands. He is survived by his daughter, Sophia, his floor girl Jess and many other family and friends. His memorial was Sunday, Aug. 12

Northrop helps Hawthorne school science program
Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach is underwriting the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention program this summer at Zela Davis Elementary School in Hawthorne.

The week long camp for first through sixth grade students provides hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Children will spend their week rebuilding an eco-friendly city, and “reassembling” a crashed spacecraft.
