Fundraisers: Boarding For Breast Cancer (B4BC) invites the public to take part in the 5th annual Skate the Coast on Saturday, Oct. 29. The 18-mile longboard-a-thon promotes being healthy and active while raising funds for breast cancer prevention. Skaters meet at 8 a.m. at Veteran’s Park in Redondo Beach where a shuttle will transport participants to the start at the Santa Monica Pier. The skate ends at Redondo Beach Riviera Plaza (near Trader Joe’s) where a post-skate fundraiser hosted by Wahoo’s Fish Taco will be held from 3-7 p.m. Entry fee is $25. All active and retired U.S. Military are offered free unlimited classes with no obligation to join at South Bay Jiu Jitsu, 325 Pacific Coast Hwy. in Hermosa Beach, during the month of October. Classes include Boot Camp Conditioning, Cardio MMA, Jeet Kune Do/Kickboxing, Boxing, Grappling/Submission Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and American Jiu Jitsu. An anonymous Manhattan Beach resident has pledged to donate $100 to South Bay Jiu Jitsu for every U.S. Military person who signs up for classes in October. Football: Co-Ed Flag Football on the Beach will host its year-end tournament from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. Played at 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach, games are played with two 20 minute halves, alternating guy and girl quarterbacks. Registration is available at the Community Center at 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach. Cost is $100 per team if pre-registered ($125 day of the event). Volleyball: The Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame has found a home and a kick off party will be held Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Hermosa Beach Community Center, the site of the new exhibit. The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) founded the Hall of Fame back in 1992 but until recently lacked funding and a location. The party will include a nostalgic photo display, a beach volleyball highlight video as well as honor a handful of inductees Chris McGee and Jim Arico will emcee the evening. All Hall of Fame inductees are invited to attend. Photos, videos and other items are wanted for the exhibit. Donation is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Cycling: Aspiring racers are invited to join the South Bay Wheelmen cycling club which is holding the Dave Richardson Series consisting of 11 races in three months that are a mix of criteriums, road races, and time trials. Racers are divided into A and B categories, depending on experience. Men and women race together but are scored separately as are age-graded categories. Running: Registration is open for the G.I. Joe Bootcamp Fall Pier 2 Pier Run/Walk to be held Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 a.m. Presented by the City of Hermosa Beach, the event includes professional timing and prizes. Cost is $25 per runner (add $10 after Oct. 15). Partial proceeds benefit the Air Force Sergeants Association, Grandparents As Parents and Vitality City in memory of Charlie Saikley. Basketball: Registration is open for the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball League at the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach. Celebrating its 31st year, the league begins in January and is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 10th grade. Fees are $125 (first player), $120 (second player) and $100 (third player). Fitness: AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls which are open every day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a Ropes Course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost is $20 and advance registration is recommended.
