Best Bike Shop: Hermosa Cyclery

Founded in 1974 by Harold Schumaker, Hermosa Cyclery remains in the same tan, two-story structure fronting 13th Street near The Strand and is known as the place with the “free air,” where an air hose dangles outside the business so passing cyclers can fill their tires without asking. They specialize in one-, three- and seven-speedStrandcruisers, and serve as authorized dealers of Electra, Sun Bicycles and KHS. They also serve as an authorized Rollerblade dealer, and carry Sure-Grip roller skates. Open 7 days a week, for sales and repairs.

Over the years, the shop has employed countless numbers of Hermosa kids. Schumaker died in 2002, willing his store to Steve Collins, Larry Burke, Ken Liebowitz and Mark McNeill, all former employees from the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Hermosa Cyclery has paid homage to Schumaker naming a line of bicycles after him.

“We’re a simple store with a big personality,” Collins said. “We are so humbled to win this award again. I asked myself ‘How did this dinky little shop win again?’ but we couldn’t be more excited.”

Collins attributes the shop’s success to its employees.

“They all love working here and serving customers while giving back to the community,” Collins explained. “We consider ourselves stewards of this long-standing institution.”
