The fashion industry has long recognized Beach City surf shops as leading trend indicators. So it’s not a surprise that over the years, surf shops have increasingly expanded their clothing lines. Nowhere is this more evident than at Spyder Surf in Hermosa Beach. The south wall of the 100-foot deep store on Pier Plaza is lined with shirts and pants, as suitable for casual Fridays as for partying. Hoodies and T-shirts are still popular, especially with tourists, Spyder manager Tamar Lentz said. Spyder offers the full range of surf brands, including Hurley, Rip Curl, Volcom and Misk. But Leah Shirejian’s Ribbons has been a Village mainstay since the 1980s by offering great customer service, and a large selection of comfortable and stylish clothes at reasonable prices. “We have a very loyal following,” sales associate Bridget Lubrani said. “They’re known as Ribbonettes, customers and employees and their families who have shopped here forever.”
