Zislis, Simms, Sowers to lead MB chamber seminar on “Economic Evolution”
Shade Hotel’s Mike Zislis, Simmzy’s restaurants’ Mike Simms and Bank of Manhattan’s chief banking officer Rick Sowers will lead a seminar on “Navigating through Economic Evolution” at the Manhattan Beach Marriott on Tuesday, September 25, from 8 to 10 a.m. Other panelist are Marty Shelton of NAI Capital and Darrell Sperber of John Elway Manhattan Beach Toyota/Scion. The seminar will focus on the local impact of global changes.

The seminar is hosted by the Manhattan Beach chamber and will be moderated by KNX Radio talk show host Frank Mottek will moderate. Registration is $40.

Hermosa to ban restaurant polystyrene containers
The Hermosa Beach City Council has voted to ban polystyrene takeout containers in the city, making Hermosa Beach the first community in the South Bay to enact such restrictions.

On Monday August 13, just a month after 5,000 Manhattan Beach homes lost power as the result of a switch malfunction, another 1,800 Manhattan residents lost power due to a cable malfunction.

Torrance CEO Mahjoor to rappel down Europe’s tallest building
Fasha Mahjoor, founder and CEO of Phenomenex in Torrance, will rappel down from 87th floor of The Shard in London, Europe’s tallest building. Mahjoor will be joined in the Monday, September 3 descent by His Royal Highness The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, who chairs the Outward Bound Trust. Mahjoor’s goal is to raise $230,000 for the trust.

The Outward Bound Trust has enabled over one million underprivileged youth to participate outdoor programs that provide lessons in responsibility, teamwork, and leadership.

Fasha Mahjoor, an architect, founded Penomenex in 1982. The company develops chemistry processes for separation and purification of pharmaceutical products.

Northrop Grumman Ed Foundation sends rockets Hawthorne kids to Camp Invention
52 Hawthorne students were able to attend Camp Invention at Zela Davis elementary school last week, thanks to a $12,000 grant from Redondo Beach’s Northrop Grumman Education Foundation.

NBCOlympics.com racked up 1.9 million pageviews, thanks in part to Beach City soccer and volleyball Olympians. The most widely watched Olympic live stream was the gold medal soccer match between Japan and the U.S., led by forward Abby Wambach of Hermosa. The match was the top streamed competition, with 1.46 million online viewers.

Beach Volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor was among the athletes who received the most clicks. May, who teamed with Hermosan Kerri Walsh for their third consecutive Olympic gold, who received 7.6 million clicks to rank firth in clicks behind Michael Phelps, who received 7.9 million clicks. The most clicked athlete was gymnast Gabby Douglass with 23.4 million clicks

Chef Owner/Skylar Tourigny and her husband Pete, a AAA beach volleyball player named their spicy brisket Panini “The Hov” after Manhattan Open winner Tim Hovland, their Brazilian acai bowl the Loiola after Brazilian Olympian Jose Loiola and their wild salmon after Olympic bronze medalist Holly McPeak.

The neighborhood eatery serves fresh organic meals made from scratch, fresh baked pastries and desserts, organic coffee, exotic teas, beers and boutique wines. Its old school, beach ambience comes from its volleyball and surfing photos and historic Manhattan Beach pictures.
