
Professional beach volleyball players from the South Bay had a strong presence at the National Volleyball League’s inaugural event which was the first domestic tournament of the season. Tenth-seeded Tealle Hunkus and Heather Lowe upset top-seeded Annett Davis and Lisa Rutledge to win the women’s title and top-seeded John Hyden and Sean Scott played true to form to capture the men’s championship.

After Tuesday’s rain postponed many of the baseball and softball wild-card games in the CIF playoffs, play resumed Wednesday with first round action slated for Thursday. Mira Costa’s softball team advanced to the opening round with a thrilling 8-7 extra-inning home victory over Righetti.
