Man stabs co-worker, boss, in El Segundo

A 18-year-old man stabbed and critically wounded a co-worker and injured his boss last Wednesday afternoon in El Segundo.
Nery K. Ramos was captured after briefly eluding a multi-agency manhunt. As Los Angeles County Sheriffs and El Segundo, Hawthorne, and Manhattan Beach police officers established a perimeter and searched with a helicopter and K-9’s, Ramos robbed a clothing store on Maple Avenue, changed clothes, and continued fleeing on foot until officers finally found and detained him near the intersection of Imperial Highway and Aviation Boulevard.
He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in a workplace.
The victims both worked with Ramos at an industrial laundry service located on the 100 block of Center Street. The owner of the business suffered knife wounds but was later released from a local hospital. Ramos’ co-worker sustained multiple stab wounds and remained in critical condition.
“They were certainly life threatening injuries,” said Lt. Ray Garcia of the El Segundo Police Department. “The victim is in critical condition, but stable.”
Police believe the fight grew out of a verbal altercation at the workplace, where Ramos had worked for roughly a year. Garcia said it was the first act of workplace violence in El Segundo in nearly two decades. The lieutenant said that although such acts are rare locally, the incident serves as a reminder for workplaces everywhere regarding the unpredictability of conflicts.
“Anything can happen,” Garcia said. “You have no idea what is going to trigger someone. In this case, the argument happened quickly. I mean, it’s unfortunate for all involved. This kid is 18 and is about to spend his life in jail…and the victims were seriously hurt, all over something that could have been resolved otherwise.”
