Volleyball: National High School Coach of the Year Tommy Chaffins is having clinics starting up for beginning to intermediate boys and girls in 3rd through 8th grades. Beach Volleyball: Elite Beach Volleyball hosts Fall Ball Clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, through Oct. 30 from 4-6 p.m. at Marine Avenue in Manhattan Beach. Cost is $75 per clinic with discounts on five or more. Club season tryouts for girls in grades 6-8 (youth) and 9-12 (high school) will be held at Marine Avenue courts Sunday Sept. 30 from 9-11 a.m. Cost is $40. Two local athletes closed out the four-stop King of the Court Crown Series as champions when the teams of Alix Klineman (Manhattan Beach)/April Ross and Taylor Crabb (Redondo Beach)/Jake Gibb took top honors among the international competition in Huntington Beach. The win was the fourth straight AVP title for Klineman and Ross as they beat Canada’s Sarah Pavin and Melissa Humana-Paredes. Crabb and Gibb defeated Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira for their title.

 

Basketball: The Dave Miller Basketball Academy is offering a unique basketball experience for young players across the South Bay, using the same drills and terminology that Miller taught in the NBA, college, high school and with elite youth teams. Celebrating its 38th season, the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball League is holding sign-ups and tryouts for its winter season. Open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade, mandatory tryouts will be held Saturday Oct. 13 (boys) and Sunday, Oct. 14 (girls) at the Hermosa Beach Community Center Gym, 710 Pier Ave. Fees are $180 for first player in family, $165 for second and $150 for third (add $10 per player after Oct. 1). Running: The 41st running of the Manhattan Beach 10K takes place on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 a.m. Founded in 1978 by a group of local runners, the race continues to be a partnership between the City of Manhattan Beach and the Race Committee. The non-profit race benefits various health and fitness enhancements to the recreation facilities of local schools and parks, along with scholarships to Manhattan Beach high school seniors. Beach Tennis: The Beach Tennis Association will be holding a Halloween Tournament at 14th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Men’s and Women’s Doubles Advanced/over 40 and Open compete on Saturday followed by a Men’s/Women’s Doubles Round Robin Format (no partners needed) tournament on Sunday.
