A smile is infectious.  The smiles of new surfers and my friends Marissa Kitahata and David Mendieta lit up the beach today, and their energy and excitement could be felt by all of the surrounding ocean enthusiasts.

After a quick session early in the morning, I met Marissa and David (who should win couple of the year award) in Redondo Beach today to give them some lessons and hopefully pass along the surf bug.  Being at the beach and seeing people’s eyes perk up who don’t normally encounter the ocean reminds you of how lucky we are to be in a place like this, to cherish the moments we get to spend with the sea, and to not take one second for granted.  Seeing them so happy made me feel like it was my first time having my toes in the sand, and everyone, including myself, was giddy with laughter.

After a beach bootcamp of practicing pop-ups and some slipping and sliding on the boards in the water, they both eased into the task and were standing up riding waves by themselves in no time.  Marissa told me that she could see why I wanted to do this every day, and said she was just so overjoyed to be in the ocean, surfing or not.

My soul needs a little more ocean therapy today, but I think I’ll save my shoulders for a head-clearing solo surf trip tomorrow and instead go weave through bodies, surfing the strand on my skateboard.
