Endless Session, Day 222: FunBuns

Casey Lewis: Best Friend Extraordinaire and surf wagon supplier (at least while my car is still broken).

Waking up at the buttcrack of dawn if you’re not a morning person isn’t easy.  That’s why I take my hat off to Casey, who groggily showed up to my house at just after 6:30, tired but nevertheless ready for an ultimate girls’ morning surf trip.

On the road we went, coffee fueling what didn’t even need any kindle — nonstop silliness and no pause chatter all the way down to Blackies in Newport Beach, the ultimate beach-break longboard haven.  Skipping around in the parking lot, I glanced to the surf and watched a talented logger trim down the line and thought to myself, “That guy sure surfs like Kris Hall,” South Bay poster boy for traditional longboarding and friend that I regularly see in the lineup all over the Beach Cities.  But we are all the way in Newport, and Kris wouldn’t be far down this way, would he?

“Morgan!!”  Sure enough, Taylor, Kris’s girlfriend, ran up to Casey and I in the bustling Blackies parking lot, and while she returned to continue napping in their big surf-burban, Casey and I joined Hall and their bubbly, always-smiling friend Alaina in the glassy surf.

The Sunday crowd was heavy, but the best part about that wave is that there are peaks everywhere, and no matter where you sit, everyone snags enough rides to make you want a huge breakfast burrito and a long nap.  So basically that’s what Casey and I did — surfed our faces off with Kris and Alaina and after hours of waves headed across the street to Mutt Lynches for breakfast burritos and the biggest mimosa I’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking.  That was not the best part however — we ordered some bready cinnamon sugar thing called funbuns, and logically thinking they were mini-donut sized, got the large order of 10, for a fair price of $6.  They arrived, and these surprisingly massive pockets of goodness and thigh sticking buttery joy garnered the attention of just about everyone sitting within eyeshot of us.  We ended up handing out half our funbuns to our wide-eyed neighbors, and certainly sweetened up the day of a few Mutt patrons.

After consuming maybe five times the calories that we burned surfing, the boards were strapped down, and back down PCH we went, stopping at the Seal Beach pier for a quick continuation of ladies morning and one last dip in the Pacific before the finally making our way home.

Casey slept ever so peacefully on the ride home, and I rolled down the window to have some freeway air blast my face to keep me awake, funbuns and double-sessions making for a sleepy crew of bestie surfer girls.
