A late start on Day 233 in a row of straight surfing had me miss out on riding around with quite a few members of the Southside Pier crew, but my friend Boris Vishnevsky and I, both looking a little tired and draggy (him with a bad back and me with an achy head) joined together in our own hot mess mission: hit some high tide waves, have a solid surf session, and get as silly as humanly possible.

The still dirty sludgewater, in the midst of our ailments, felt cool and cleansing on our faces, and we charged through the steady incoming sets to join Marcus Fender and our friend Jim, who both had the right idea and were out much earlier than our 9 a.m. procrastinating selves.  The Southside of the pier, now dubbed “Out Fronts” by Boris and I, was spawning some good sized and surprisingly long waves, which was helping to make the mission of the morning pretty damn successful.  It seemed as though every time one of us took a wave, a long line of sets rolled in and wiped us out, and at more than a few points I looked over at a struggling Boris, and he looked back at a struggling me, and we kept going and laughed it off with surfer spirit.

After Boris got out for some much needed and very interesting-looking back stretches on the beach, I continued to play around in the rollers for a bit, occasionally losing my hat, my board, and maybe some of my mind, and bounced back and forth from playing on the shore to laying on my board in ocean, not wanting to leave the water’s edge.  Parking ticket anxiety finally ripped me from the sand, and the silly surf and swim crew of Boris, Max, and myself disappeared back into the asphalt, another day of fun and friends in the books.
