Endless Session, Day 243: An Ode to Morning Surf Checks

Ritual morning surf checks are the best, and generally tend to go like this –

Waking up with tangled sleep hair and grabbing the first unmatching pair of comfy clothes you can find (and brightly colored shoes or sandals that throw everything off even more), you slip-slide running down your hardwood floor and grab your skateboard, charging towards the pier and only stopping briefly to fill your coffee cup at local beach-goer fuel station Brother’s Burritos.

You quickly gulp some hot bean water, spilling a good amount on your light colored hoodie, and speed off on your trusty wheels to meet your surf gang, who are already overlooking the break at a crisp 7:20, the sun barely hanging the air being so soon after daylight savings time.  Chat commences back and forth, switching between the size and shape of the wave, what the wind and tide is doing, and what everyone ate for dinner last night.  It’s not just getting in the water, but the whole surrounding experience that acts as the chocolate chips in that already more than perfect bowl of vanilla ice cream.

And so a decision is made.  One has work soon, the other is packing for a trip, and two decide to take a cold bath in the Pacific.  But of course not before much more conversation and lollygagging in the parking lot.

A few suits are put on (not the cloth kind) and the group splits; the comrades bid farewell to their other halves, and a “see you tomorrow,” is said and heard by all, knowing that, more than likely, all will be atop the pier again soon enough, together watching the rolls of the sea.
