Manhattan Beach resident Todd Dipaola (left) and Julian Katz, chair of the Hermosa Pubic Works Commission, received Environmental Hero Awards at Saturday’s Earth Day Festival in Polliwog Park.

The event was hosted by Volunteers and Organizations Improving the Community’s Environment (VOICE).

Last year, Dipaola founded the South Bay Bike Coalition, which has raised $24,000 in county grants and $6,000 from the Beach Cities Health District to make South Bay roads more biker-friendly. Katz was instrumental in creating Hermosa Beach’s bike master plan, as well as getting sharrows installed on Hermosa Avenue.
