The South Bay Scholastic Surfing Association begins each season with the Kick Off Classic, a series of contests that provides coaches and team riders a preview of the competition they will face in the upcoming league meets. The league has over 300 surfers from 12 high schools. El Segundo’s young team advanced two surfers to the Kick Off Classic finals held last month at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Sophomore Grayson Daley placed fourth in the longboard division, riding a board he designed and shaped. Freshman Lucas Glastetter also advanced to the Kick Off Classic finals, but failed to place. Coach Tyler Contarsy said the young team is led this year by junior Grayson Daley and sophomore Phillip Barnett.
