Distance runners lead field of local CIF qualifiers

Led by Mira Costa’s Aryn Foland, who had the fastest time in the 1,600 meters at the preliminaries, Mira Costa and Redondo will have a strong presence in the girls distance races when the CIF Southern Section-Ford Track & Field Championships take place Saturday at Cerritos College beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Foland’s time of 4:57.6 in the 1,600 was the best of the day at the Division 2 prelims held Saturday at Moorpark High School. Redondo runners Lyndsey Mull (2nd, 4:58.99) and Cara Ulizio (7th, 5:02.8) also qualified for the finals. Sea Hawk Rachel Bush (5:04.43) is the first alternate.

Mira Costa had three runners qualify in the 3,200 with Savannah Pio (4th, 10:53), Foland (6th, 10:56) and Kelli Sugimoto (9th, 10:58) advancing to Saturday’s competition.

The Mustang’s Ashlee Dotson continues to be a quadruple threat, qualifying in the 100 (9th, 12.38), 200 (9th, 25.42) and as the anchor on the Mira Costa relay teams that placed seventh. Dotson teamed with Taylor Foland, Kirby Benson and Camille Mills in the 400 relay (49.1) and with Taylor Foland, Claire Barnett and Charlotte Barnett in the 1,600 relay (3:58.9).

Mills, a freshman, qualified in the 100 finishing 8th with a time of 12.35. Mustang hurdler Acacia Moore is a first alternate in the 100h (15.54).

Redondo’s Haley Miller advances after placing 6th in the triple jump (35-9) and teammate Jasmine Freeman is an alternate in the pole vault (10-9).

In boys competition, Redondo sophomore Evan Malone-White qualified for the finals with a fourth-place finish in the 1,600 (4:15.64). Teammate Christian Bassman advances after finishing fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.86.

Mira Costa’s J.R. Tavai qualified in the shot put (5th, 55-2) and Brett Douville advanced to Saturday’s competition in the 800 (6th, 1:55.6).
