Beach volleyball Olympic gold medalist and former Mira Costa player and coach, Eric Fonoimoana

Beach Volleyball: After a six-year tenure as the Mira Costa High School beach volleyball coach, head coach Eric Fonoimoana is leaving to help the USC Beach team capture an National Championship. Fonoimoana leaves his alma mater after leading the Mustangs to an 87-0 record with six IBVL and back-to-back State championships.

 

The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding the Cal Cup Invitational State Championships for boys and girls 18U, 16U, 14U and 12U divisions on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Visit CBVA.com to register.

 

Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race: The 40th annual Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race starts Sunday, Aug. 26 at 6 a.m. at the Isthmus cove on Catalina Island and finishes at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Top paddlers are expected to finish the 32-mile race in just over five hours. Over 100 paddlers are expected to compete. For more information visit CatalinaClassicPaddleboardRace.org.

 

Fundraising: The fourth annual “Row for a Reason” will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8 at Body One Fitness, 201 Herondo St. in Redondo Beach. The event begins at 4 p.m. Friday raising funds for Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach. Each $50 donation ensures a half hour time slot. To register visit rowforareason.org. Volleyball: The United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) is holding registration for the 2018 fall program in Hermosa Beach. Boys and girls ages 7-15 have the opportunity to learn and play volleyball in an eight-week, coed developmental league. The league runs September 10 through October 29 at South Park. Practices for the league will be held on Mondays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and games on Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Registration is available online at usyvl.org and includes a volleyball, t-shirt, and end of season participation award.

 

Beach Tennis: The Beach Tennis Association (BTA) holds its Endless Summer tournament Aug. 25-26 and the Indian Summer tournament Sept. 15-16 in Hermosa Beach. Winners will compete in the BTA US Championship Nov. 3-4 in Hermosa Beach. A Beginner Class will be held Monday evenings 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 13 – Sept. 3. Running: The 41st running of the Manhattan Beach 10k takes place on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 a.m. Founded in 1978 by a group of local runners, the race continues to be a partnership between the City of Manhattan Beach and the Race Committee. The non-profit race benefits various health and fitness enhancements to the recreation facilities of local schools and parks, along with scholarships to Manhattan Beach high school seniors.
