The Eick family, of Burbank, has been participating in the Hermosa Beach Sandman Contest since daughter Ebie was five years old. Ebie is now 13. Eric Johnson, of Manhattan Beach, has been competing in the Sandman Contest since his kids were toddlers. Now they’re grown and his children come no more. So Johnson sculpted a sandman with a throne for other families’ children to sit on.

Some of this year’s entries were traditional. Everest Ma, 5, and his mother built a Frosty the Sandman wearing a scarf and stovepipe hat.  It won the Best Dressed Sandman Award. Some were fanciful, such as the Wood Family’s dolphin flying over a Christmas tree. It won the Best Traditional Sandman Award.

Recreation coordinator Nick Shattuck has been organizing the two-decades-old tradition for the past 11 years.

“It’s my favorite Hermosa family tradition,” he told the participants. ER
