Green Line pay parking signs pulled after ‘miscommunication’

LA Metro has removed paid parking signs for the Redondo Marine Green Line Station, in North Redondo Beach after the signs were installed erroneously, Metro spokespeople said.

Though the mistake came as the county public transit authority plans expanding paid parking throughout the system pay parking along the Green Line will roll out slowly, according to Metro.

The error first came to Metro’s attention during the Aug. 20 meeting of the Lawndale City Council. After a presentation about the planned Green Line extension to Torrance, Lawndale resident Regina Brown went to the podium.

Brown works in downtown Los Angeles, and her commute takes her to the Marine station, where she spotted signs informing users that they will need to pay for parking, either through a mobile app or using a kiosk.

“To find a sign up that you’re going to charge us three bucks a day to park, $60 a month…how dare you?” Brown said to Metro representatives.

Metro spokesman Mark Dierking then quickly responded to say that the signs were put up in error, and would be removed immediately.

The next day, pay parking signs were covered at the Marine station and nearby Douglas station, in El Segundo, and later removed. No money was charged while the signs were up, and the Metro web app didn’t accept attempts to pay for parking.

According to Metro spokesman Frank Ching, the signs were incorrectly installed in early August “due to miscommunication.”

Pay parking began at Green Line parking in June at four stations: Aviation/LAX, Crenshaw, Lakewood, and Norwalk.

Metro plans on expanding the program further to Hawthorne/Lennox station within the fiscal year and will consider further expansions.

“As parking demand continues to grow, Metro will consider implementing the program at any of our parking facilities,” Ching said.
