When Hermosa Beach resident David Floyd got the news he’d won $500,000 from the Palos Verdes Art Center’s annual Win Your Dream House Raffle! he said he went “a little crazy.”

“It was pretty unbelievable,” Floyd said. “The first reaction is somebody is pulling some trick on you somehow. It’s taken a while for it to sink in.”

The 52-year-old television producer currently lives in a one-bedroom apartment with his fiance. The two plan to get married later this year. He said the money will afford them a nicer wedding and honeymoon along with a down payment on a new home.

“It’s not so much money that it’s a life changer, but it’s certainly a day-maker,” Floyd joked. “This will definitely relieve a lot of the pressures of day-to-day life but it won’t necessarily change what I’m doing.”

He said he doesn’t plan to quit his job or do anything too extravagant. In years past, Floyd said he’s bought tickets for this particular raffle. This time, he bought two tickets.

“I thought that’s not too bad,” he said. For friends who say they’re jealous, Floyd joked, “You can only be jealous if you also bought a ticket.”

The Center awarded 200 other cash prizes including two $25,000 prizes and a $10,000 prize. During its early bird drawing it gave away $300,000, having sold more than 10,000 tickets at $150 each. Over the past 10 years, the PV Art Center has given away more than $11 million through its fundraising raffles.
