Homeless count

The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count will take place next week throughout Los Angeles County, with Hermosa’s taking place on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

The count, organized by Los Angeles’ Homeless Services Authority, collects data that is ultimately used to determine the amount of aid local agencies will receive from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to address homelessness.

In Los Angeles County, homelessness has increased significantly since the Great Recession but fell slightly last year. In Hermosa, the count tallied 23 homeless people in 2018, an increase from 19 the year before. The count will take place roughly between 8 p.m. and midnight. Volunteers will meet at City Hall for a presentation, they are dispatched in teams. To register, go to theycountwillyou.org.

Waste recycling

The Los Angeles County Public Works Department will be collecting hazardous and e-waste for specialized recycling at Clark Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bus study

Metro is planning significant changes to bus service throughout the county, and is seeking to gather resident input for its NextGen Bus Study. One of two community events for the South Bay region will take place Thursday, Jan. 17 at the east dining room of El Camino College in Torrance from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
