Ringing in the new year

Pier Plaza was filled with families on New Year’s Eve for the 9 p.m. Beach Ball Drop, which coincides with the Ball Drop in New York City’s Time Square. At midnight the Plaza filled up again for a second Beach Ball Drop celebrating the start of the New Year in California. Keeping spirits up between ball drops were Lou Giovanetti and his Big Band and Mira Costa jazz singer Olivia Morgan. The evening is organized by the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, and is staged by Mike Bell Events

North School meeting

The board of the Hermosa Beach City School District will vote on whether to approve the Environmental Impact Report for North School at its upcoming meeting next Wednesday night. The decision on the EIR comes months later than the district had originally planned, because the board voted last year to revise the section of the report dealing with traffic and parking. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in City Council chambers.
