Quick Pitch Contest

Friday is the deadline for local nonprofits to have the chance to earn up to $10,000 for their cause in the Quick Pitch Contest from the Hermosa Friends Foundation. Since 2016, the foundation has collected $150 contributions from members and used the pooled money to amplify the work of local organizations, including the Hermosa Beach Historical Society and the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation, and has provided scholarships to area high school students. The contest asks those interested to make a four-minute presentation to an audience of foundation board members and guests, and is intended to benefit nonprofits “giving back to the community in the greater South Bay area,” according to a statement from the foundation. Applications are available at www.hermosafriends.org, and must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on March 1. The organizations selected to make presentations will take place in the 2nd Story Theatre in the Hermosa Community Center on March 28 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Bond oversight committee

The group responsible for informing the public about expenditures of the Measure S school bond is accepting applications to fill a vacancy. Measure S, passed by voters in June 2016, provided $59 million to the Hermosa Beach City School District for construction, renovation and maintenance of district facilities, including the North School reconstruction project, which was approved by the Board of Education last month. The Bond Oversight Committee, which meets four times per year, does not have authority to decide how bond funds are spent. Instead, it makes an annual, public report about how the money is being spent to which the school board is required to reply. Committee members are not paid for their service. All Hermosa residents, except those employed by or contracting with the district, are eligible. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Thursday, and the term will begin in April. To apply, email pmontalbo@hbcsd.org.

Adrienne’s search for a cure

The 13th Annual Adrienne’s Search for a Children’s Cancer Cure Fundraiser will take place at the Hermosa Kiwanis Hall on Valley Drive this Saturday night. The event, hosted by the Woman’s Club of Hermosa Beach, raises money each year for a different charity devoted to battling children’s cancer; this year’s chosen organization focuses on research and treatment for osteosarcoma, a variety of bone cancer. The event includes a catered dinner by chef Rafael Solorzano, magic from a performer at the Magic Castle, and live music from local band Feed the Kitty. Proceeds from a silent auction will go to charity, as will admissions. Tickets are $35, and can be purchased at the Woman’s Club website. Kids under 12 get in free.
