Home height exemption denied

A resident’s application for a height limit exemption on a single-family dwelling at 611 Monterey Blvd. has been denied by the Hermosa Beach Planning Commission.

The owner, former Hermosa Beach councilman Michael Keegan, wanted to add as much as 4 feet, 9 inches to the existing height limit of 30 feet. He told the commission that granting the exception would “make our building appear not much different in height than our northerly neighbor.” He said the property’s narrow lot made “traditional space planning difficult.”

Numerous residents voiced opposition to the proposal.

City staff recommended against granting the exemption, arguing that conditions for approval had not been met, and that “natural light and air” for neighboring residences would be adversely affected by the higher construction.

There will be no appeal of the decision to the city council, according to a person with knowledge of the issue.

The last height limit exception considered by the planning commission was in 2011. That property was also on Monterey Boulevard, and that request was also denied. Library bookstore
